Coolest Workspace Contest: The Adjustable Desk

How to Make a Persuasive Business PortfolioShop from a wide selection of sit to stand desks at Beyond The Office Door. Offering free shipping and no sales tax every adjustable height desk in stock! The latest entry in Lifehacker's Coolest Workspace Contest comes in from Bryan, who has a sweet desk that adjusts in height so he can use it from a sitting or standing position. No, really! Check out the photos of Bryan's setup after the jump.  Standing computer tables and stand up desks give you sit stand workstation benefits. Pneumatic workstation - height adjustable with a large work surface. Rather than a full-time standing desk, I ended up going with an electric adjustable height desk — I couldn't imagine working ALL the time

Bryan says:

Having been a computer user all my life, and now relying on them for my livelihood, RSI is a concern for me. That's why I've built up my workstation as a malleable environment. My desk moves from sitting to standing height with the press of a button, and my keyboard and mouse are both wireless and free to roam around with me.adjustable-header.gif

When people first see me standing at my desk, they ask me how I can stand up for so long. It took awhile to get used to it, but now I actually prefer standing - at least when I'm working. I've found that standing frees me from the urge to sit at my computer for hours on end. When standing, I'm much more free - both physically and psychologically - to move around, and find myself walking around my apartment more often. But then again, it was important to me that my desk be easily changeable, so I could mix in some sitting sessions as well. Upright advocate as I am, standing while watching a film still seems a little silly.

As far as my tech, I run a Dell GX620 computer, with two Dell 2001fp 20" monitors rotated vertically. My memory card reader is attached to my monitor for easy access (I take a lot of photos). My cell phone is docked next to my computer for incoming calls, and my important documents are arranged on the shelf above my desk so they're always in view.

The vertical arrangement of the dual monitors allows me to view more of my programs at once (I'm a web developer) as well as read full lifehacker articles. I usually have my work on one monitor, and my e-mail (or lifehacker) on the other. Google Desktop adorns the far right of the screen, displaying my todo list, today's google calendar events, and a handy calculator.

Sure, this wasn't the cheapest setup around, but it has been assembled over time and uses many older components. The monitors, for example, cost me $600 total on craigslist about 2 years ago, and the wireless keyboard and mouse about $50. The stand-up desk I bought new, but believe it or not, is ikea. About $450. I built up this kit while in school, using the money from part-time freelance work. All told, it's significantly cheaper (even new) than your shiny new MacBook.

My old place had a high countertop that I liked to stand at and work on the laptop when I was sick of sitting too long, so I'm with Bryan on the virtues of a standing workstation. (Plus his dual rotated monitors are pretty drool-worthy too.) Thanks, Bryan!
